1st edition hardback, 206 pages, 24 b&w photos and 12 maps. A very good review copy with Batsford's review slip inside. Some very minor fading to dj spine; the dj and hard covers have taken a small knock which has caused a 1cm closed tear on the spine and a corresponding shallow dent on the hard cover. Overall a very good copy.
Lewin tells the story of the Afrika Korps from February 1941, when Rommel arrived in Tunisia, through its long succession of engagements with the Desert Rats. It is a story of sustained bravery on both sides, with the professionalism of the Germans in marked contrast to the amateurishness of the British, which only ended with the arrival of General Montgomery.
The author, an eminent military historian, fought himself against the Germans in North Africa.
