The Peninsular War became an arena in which the redcoats of Moore and Wellington established a dazzlingly powerful military machine that never lost a battle.  In October 1813 the British army became the first invading force to set foot on the soil of Napoleonic France, but in the six years between 1808 and 1813, Spain and Portugal were ravaged by the conflict that cost the two countries in the region of one million deaths, as troops from all over Europe tore them to pieces.
