Originally published in N.Y. in 1882 as "The Dictionary of Needlework," then revised for a 2nd edition in 1887, this work appeared initially in 6 volumes. In the 1972 unabridged edition 6 volumes became 2 vols of which this is the second vol M - Z : "Machine work and Macrame - Zephyr shirting and Zulu cloth."+ supplement *
This is probably still the most comprehensive collection of stitches, patterns, materials and methods available. The publisher's description states " Including every needlecraft from ordinary sewing to the most intricate pillow lace or church embroidery and from a wide range of cultures - contemporary Victorian British, ancient Egyptian, traditional continental, Oriental, Greek, Venetian, Spanish, Moorish etc, - this set of volumes is equally valuable to the practitioner and the collector. In addition to the full and precise description of stitches, explanations of techniques, definitions of terms, identification of materials, specific projects with detailed stitching information , step by step instructions for patterns, more than 800 figures illustrating the text ( that is over the 2 vols, vol 2 starts at fig 589, all in b&w ) and a *supplementary section of 159 plates depicting nearly 550 objects to be made, there is much material of specific interest to the antiquarian, pertaining to the history and ethnography of individual needlework techniques and designs.
A great source book for needle workers, collectors, lace makers and in many instances the last record of many otherwise forgotten needlecraft specialities.
This is a large, well used soft cover book c. 8" x 11" & c. 900gms before packing. The edges and covers are worn and rubbed; there is some water staining inside the front cover and the closed page edges are grubby. However, the binding is tight and there are no marks, stains or damage to the text, illustrations, or plates. Very scarce copy.
