The full story of the largest European operation of its kind in the Second World War: the Allied seaborne and airborne assault on Nazi-occupied Southern France.  It involved 1000 ships, 3000 aircraft and ultimately one million troops.

By August 1944, Operation Dragoon, the proposed Allied invasion of the French Mediterranean coast, had been embroiled in controversy for months.  Originally scheduled to coincide with the June 6th Normandy landings, Dragoon was almost cancelled at the last minute due to bitter disputes between the highest American and British command levels and remains controversial to this day.  Gen. Eisenhower thought it essential to the final defeat of Germany; Gen Mark Clark and Winston Churchill believed it to be a major blunder resulting in much of Eastern germany falling behind the Iron Curtain.

Based on participant interviews the book focuses on the drama of men at war and details for the first time the daring airborne assault that spearheaded Operation Dragoon.

The author himself was a 20 year old mortar platoon sergeant, who landed in the first assault waves on Utah Beach in Normandy on D-Day, and subsequently saw action in five campaigns.
