1st edition, large hardback in dj, 160 pages.  A very good clean copy and similar dj.  Dj is sunned along upper and spine edge of front, and is now in a removable vinyl covering.

Published in association with the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, this comprehensive study contains over 200 images, practically all of which are in colour.  It spans over 3 thousand years of marine painting and features all the famous names, including Turner, Whistler, Monet and the van de Veldes.  It discusses their influence on later generations and also the contribution made by lesser names and those more associated with historical painting, such as Benjamin West and Theodore Gericault.

Attention is given to the role of exhibitions and competitions in encouraging maritime artists and there are chapters on the birth of American marine painting, 20th century war artists and marine painting today.
