1st edition hardback, 227 pages. A very good copy in similar dj. Herbert Agar was an American who believed right from the beginning that the USA should enter the war against Hitler. He describes his experiences when campaigning to persuade Americans that they should join the war and not just supply arms to their friends "in order that they should die in our defence." Had Britain not stood alone against German forces after the French surrender in 1940, thus saving the Western world, is the theme of Agar's book. His contention that the significance of that year has not been fully appreciated is the inspiration for his writing. He does not suggest that Britain could have been victorious on her own, rather that there would not have been a war for the allies to win had we surrendered in 1940 - it would have all been over and the Nazis would have dominated Europe. Agar feels that the implications of this have not been fully realised and describes the events of that year vividly and dramatically.
