At the time of writing the author (who also wrote Bible Plants at Kew,) was a research botanist at the Kew Herbarium. He has produced an unusual and charming book which shows how to design, plant and label a theme garden based on plants mentioned in the scriptures, in all climates of the world. There are detailed descriptions and notes on cultivation and the book is divided into the following sections: 1. Annuals - e.g. onion family; herbs such as dill, camomile and coriander; poppy; thistles; peas and beans. 2. Perennials - e.g. anemones; wormwood; chicory; lily; mint; narcissus; rue; sage; hyssop; tulip. 3. Shrubs and small trees - e.g. box; rock rose; fig; brambles; apple; mulberry; olive; almond; broom; pomegranate; rose; tamarisk; grapevine. 4. Large trees - e.g. cedar; cypress; walnut; juniper; pine; plane; oak; poplar. 5. Water plants - e.g. sweet flag; papyrus; water-lily; reeds; reed-mace, cat-tail. 6. Tender plants - e.g. acacia tree; aloes; frankincense; caperbush; carob; cinnamon; myrrh; balm-of-gilead; spikenard, nard; henna; oleander; date palm; terebinth, pistachio; castor-oil plant; crown-of-thorns. To the rear is information on Bible gardens in various parts of the world, references in the Bible; an index of common and scientific plant names + useful addresses.
