In 1980, in the Sultanate of Oman, a replica was built of an Arab sailing ship like those that had travelled the globe a thousand years earlier in search of trade. Based on meticulous research the vessel was constructed of wood from trees of the Malabar coast in India, and not a single nail was used in its construction. A crew of twenty sailed Sohar 6,000 miles across the Arabian Sea to India, then to Sri Lanka, across the Indian Ocean to Sumatra and finally, through the China Seas to Canton. During the voyage they encountered sharks, the doldrums, and violent seas, always with the intention of testing the efficacy of early Arab methods of navigation. They concluded that the myths of the Sinbad voyages were based on the exploits of early Arab spice traders. The seven and a half month voyage is one of the most remarkable sailing stories of modern times.
