This is the illustrated catalogue for a sale at Sotheby & Co, London, in November 1968. 55 plates, 5 in full colour Contains major examples of Persian and Indian miniature paintings, some unusual texts and offers an insight into the means whereby Eastern texts found their way to the West. Phillips had owned specimens from three of the most illustrious collectors of the 18th century - Sir William Jones, (a Nizami, lot 235,) Sir Elijah Impey (illustrations to the Ramayana, lots 408-425) and Sir Warren Hastings, ( a superb album of Mughal miniatures, lots 367-407.) He also acquired significant works from the sale of Sir Gregory Page-Turner's library in 1827, (Hatifi's Shirin Khusraw of 1498-9 lot 190), 36 manuscripts from Capt Robert Mignan of the East India Co in 1829, incl a 16th century Qazvini (lot 247) and a superb Shahnama by Mu'in, acquired from the Rev. John Haddon Hindley's collection.(lot 179)
