1st English edition, hardback, 111 pages, large format. Trans by H.A. & A.J. Barker. A good copy in a good dust jacket, with minimal handling wear, no marks or inscriptions. Some foxing to top of closed page edges which has infiltrated margins very slightly on some pages. Black and white photo illustrations on every page + maps and diagrams. Presented as a chronological, blow by blow account, of the Battle of Arnhem, or "Operation Market Garden" to use its code name. Shows material never previously published, from both sides, to cover the days of the operation from the afternoon of 17th September until dawn on the 26th. The fact that the Allied operation, spearheaded by the 1st Airborne Division, ultimately failed to take the Rhine bridge at Nijmegen, and suffered very heavy losses in the attempt, adds to the poignancy of the account and the accompanying photos. After 10 days the allies were forced to retreat in an operation codenamed "Operation Berlin." The author, Janus Piekalkiewicz, was a member of the Polish Underground Army at 17, and went on to become an international expert on secret agents and spies.
