1st edition hardback in dj. A very good, clean, crisp copy. 238 pages, 8 b&w illustrations. 19th century Russia was a society repressed culturally, economically and religiously by the Tsars. From this society emerged a group of women who were enlightened in their thinking, and determined in their fight for social justice and dedicated to humanist and feminine principles. This is the story of Sofya Bardina, Vera Figner, Vera Zasulich and many others who participated in the revolutionary movement between 1860-1880. They started out as peaceful propagandists and preachers, but turned to political militancy, terrorism and eventually regicide. The author was born into a Russian revolutionary family and knew many women revolutionaries. She has produced a work which paints a vivid picture of Russian life in all its aspects and she brings her heroines to life as recognisable individuals.
