The persecution of Alfred Dreyfus, for allegedly passing secrets to the Germans, was the cause celebre of 19thC France and ranks in significance with the Calas Affair in the 18thC. Dreyfus was a Jewish Officer in the French Army and the anti -Semitism caused by the case became rampant as passions were roused. The story of Dreyfus's trial, degradation and imprisonment, and his ultimate vindication is an absorbing account of the military, legal and political mores of 19thC France.
