In this sequel to Lifecloud which gained global attention, the authors maintain that not only life, but viruses and bacteria reach our planet from space. The theory is that microbes, stored deep frozen in comets since the beginning of the solar system, have arrived on earth and continue to do so. By examining pathogenic material from space and analysing plagues and epidemics, Hoyle and Wickramasinghe have instigated a major advance in our understanding of the relation of astronomy to diseases in terrestrial animals and plants. Both authors are immensely respected in the field of astronomy and interstellar matter. Fred Hoyle was knighted in 1972 for his contribution to science and astronomy; at the time of writing, Professor Wickramasinghe was Head of the Dept. of Applied Mathematics and Astronomy, University College, Cardiff.
