1st edition hard back in dj, 278 pages. 42 colour illustrations + others in b&w throughout text. In extremely good clean condition, brown hard covers immaculate, unclipped dj showing very mild shelf wear at edges. This is a very nice copy of a scarce item from The Book Guild Ltd. A definitive work on one of the 19th century's most intriguing, gifted and complex artists, who was a major figure in Scottish art, famous for his landscapes and seascapes. When he died his passing merited a tribute from Robert Louis Stevenson (See Appendix B.) The Hitchons' book describes Bough's 'lost' years as a theatrical scene painter, and his frequent 'run-ins' with the artistic establishment of this time. We see a sensitive, generous man behind the bluff Bohemian mask. Contents are listed as follows: * Starting Out (1805 - 1844) * Travelling Hopefully (1845 - 1855) * Hurrying Through Life (1855 - 1866) * Journey's End (1866 - 1878) * All that Remains * Bough's Biographers Appendix A - Bough and his Art Appendix B - Obituary by R.L. Stevenson Appendix C - An Art Dealer's Critique (Aitken Dott & Sons, Edinburgh) Appendix D - Major Exhibitions of Bough's Work Select Bibliography on Art, Artists, People and Places
