1st edition hardback in dj, 114 b&w photos with accompanying text. In very good, clean, condition. Dj has been covered in clear non removable vinyl type covering, is sunned on the spine and has a crease in the rear flyleaf, some mild 'waviness' to upper borders of text and air bubbles under rear pasted down end paper, otherwise very good. Early canal photos are rare but the author has found some remarkable prints which record the construction, operation and maintenance of the 'cuts.' His collection also shows the craft, cargoes and people involved, especially their family life, clothes and customs. The earliest example was taken in 1945 by William Fox Talbot, only 10 years after he took Britain's first ever photograph at Lacock Abbey. A number come from the archives of the Waterways Museum at Stoke Bruerne and include a valuable series taken by T.W. Milner during the course of his duties as Assistant Engineer with the Grand Junction Canal. Each photo has an extended caption providing much interesting and unusual information.
