2nd edition (revised,) hardback copy in dj. 411 pages, 54 b&w photos + diagrams drawn by J.D. Sleightholme + appendices. A very good clean copy showing minimal handling and shelf wear. Binding is tight, no tears, marks or inscriptions. A comprehensive and detailed book, covering every aspect of sails: history, theory, materials, making and finishing, rigging and tuning. Sails for working conditions, for light and heavy weather and for reaching and running, are examined in detail; Spinnakers have their own section. The author provides advice on care and maintenance and repairs together with expert information on alterations. The appendices include a table for calculating spinnaker stay lengths, instructions on the measurement of sails and further analysis of sail alterations. The author was for many years manager of the world-famous sail making firm of Ratsey & Lapthorn at Cowes, and a practising yachtsman with a wide experience of all types of craft.
