1st UK edition large hardback (folio.) 246 pages with 45 colour plates and 180 b&w. + line drawings. Very good condition, hard covers sharp and square. Blue dj has some curl at edges and the spine has faded to cream, otherwise clean and undamaged, now in vinyl cover. Approx last 50 pages have some 'rippling' at lower edges but this is barely noticeable and does not detract from what is a lovely book. Murray L. Eiland is a leading authority on the Oriental rug. This book is a companion volume to, (but independent of,) Oriental Rugs, a Comprehensive Guide. In this volume he explores the rugs and carpets of mainland China and other Asian countries and in addition, some beautiful examples from North Africa and the Balkans. He devotes separate chapters to each region, surveying the history of rug weaving in that area, and its current industry, designs, symbolism, materials and techniques. His close technical examinations have produced fresh information about dyes, materials and weaving methods and therefore made available new criteria on dating and clues to forgeries. There are detailed appendices outlining testing procedures, allowing the reader to make technical examinations for himself. Eiland's scholarship is useful not only to the connoisseur, but to the individual wishing to purchase for his own home, as he discusses not only rugs of museum quality but also those available on the general market.
