Mary Craig wrote the acclaimed Tears of Blood, an account of the plight of the Tibetan people after the Chinese invasion in 1951. Her friendship with members of the Dalai Lama's family began during the preparation of that book and here she tells the story of how a young Tibetan farmer's son was plucked from obscurity to become the fourteenth Dalai Lama. Two year old Lhamo Dhondup was now His Holiness, or Kundun - meaning The Presence. This is the account of how the entire family was affected by the destiny of one child - how they were forced from their land, their fight for survival and flight into exile in 1951. Like her earlier book, this is also the harrowing tale of the effects of the Chinese invasion and the subjugation of Tibetans and their culture.
